Mixed Media Wall Decor Update – May 2021

Personally, I am not one for hanging wall decor I hate just to have something up. I like to decorate with purpose and intention. You won’t find me plastering my walls with random signage and words like: Gather, Eat, and everyone’s favorite “Live, Laugh, Love” ;).

If you have been a follower, you know I moved out of the city in 2016 and you might also know I am just recently starting to decorate my home. But, if you’re new, welcome! And stay for awhile! As stated above, I don’t decorate just to decorate, I really have to love my pieces. Also, until the pandemic hit I was commuting into the city to work daily and didn’t spend my days working from home like I do now. Being home and in the space I inhabit has allowed me the time and luxury to get to know what I would like to see decor wise in my home.

There were 2 very obviously empty wall spaces. First, was the entryway and second was the dining room wall.

We are very blessed my husband’s grandfather is an artist, we have beautiful framed art we did not have to purchase. We have so many pieces, framed and unframed. It’s definitely a good problem to have. It’s one thing I will definitely not declutter.

If you are local to the South Shore in MA, check out Ed Mikenas’ work at Front Street Gallery in Scituate sponsored by The Scituate Arts Association

Unfortunately, you need a good mix of art and decor.

Here’s how it turned out:

In the front entryway we did a little gallery wall of 3 watercolor paintings, but there was definitely something missing on the opposite wall. As for the dining room, I knew I wanted to hang a charcoal of Trinity Church in Back Bay and I thought I wanted a mirror next to it.

I ordered this mirror:

If you like it, click the link and order! It comes in 3 different sizes, I got the 24 inch.

When I got the mirror I decided it was too close to the same size as the frame for the charcoal drawing. But, when I tried it on the bit of wall in the entryway hallway, voila! It was complete!

I was left still stuck on the dining room wall. I bought lattice wall decor from Target, but the size didn’t workout again. Finally, I decided maybe fake wreaths would work, so I started searching for some I wanted. Alas, I could not find ones I loved, so I decided to make them! I knew I wanted a gold hoop wreath and some stick wreaths.

I ordered these from Amazon:

Then, I went to the craft store to browse the fake florals and ribbons. Fake flowers are something you have to see in person so they don’t look completely, well, fake. This was the result:

I’m not in love with how the ribbon dangles from the gold hoop – like at all, but I’m so happy the charcoal drawing is up! The space is filled in a complementary manner at the very least. I might try trimming, straightening, or curling… Thoughts?

These will also be super fun to dust (/sarcasm). But it’s a start!

Questions:

Anyone else ever just make their own decor because you can’t find the *exact* piece you want?

Are you a decorate to decorate person or a wait to find your perfect fit for each space?
